Cumbria Tourism - Food

We do love our English Summers but the Autumn holds a special place for us.  We know that winter is coming and that the day will soon be bitterly cold  with afternoons becoming oppressive and darker still but for that brief period in time it is absolutely glorious.  The landscape changes and a closeness sets in.  Damp Barbours and even damper dogs fill the mud room, the heat in the Land Rover feels inadequate, good friends come in for the Pheasants, and we wrap ourselves in luxurious fabrics…heavier weight cottons, rich flannels, sumptuous cashmere, and the history of tweeds.

The rich umbers and browns of the countryside inspire us to no end.  The first dusting of snow up high gives relief to the colours nestled in the valley.  Walks twists and turn through the slick tracked hillsides.  The deep peatiness of a glass of Laphroaig, an ancient sooted fireplace in the study roaring with last years dried wood.
